The role involves assisting a young person with an undiagnosed medical condition resulting in low muscle tone and significant physical support needs. She requires assistance with personal care, respiratory support, feeding, positioning, and safe participation in daily activities.

The Carer/Support Worker will provide practical and compassionate care to support this young person's health, safety, and quality of life in her home and community.

Key Responsibilities
Personal Care and Daily Living- Assist with positioning (bed, chair, side-lying) and safe transfers using a hoist system.
- Support with dressing, toileting, nappy changes, and showering/bed bathing.
- Implement routines for respiratory care, including suction, cough assist, VPAP, and nebuliser treatments.
- Regular feeding during the day via Mickey button (gravity feed and flushing) and manage all feeding equipment cleaning/sterilisation.
- Monitor during and after feeds for airway safety, using suction if required.
- Prepare and administer prescribed medications accurately.
- Maintain equipment hygiene (VPAP mask, nebuliser, tubing) and vinegar/water sterilisation routines.
- Observe for signs of distress or illness and escalate concerns appropriately.
- From time to time this young person is hospitalized and during these times the carer would continue in the hospital environment.
- Assist with percussion physiotherapy and breathing exercises.
- Facilitate activities she enjoys (reading, puzzles, trivia, music, computer time) to encourage engagement and social interaction.
- Promote a positive environment that supports emotional well-being.
- Light household duties relating to the young person's care (laundry, cleaning of feeding and medical equipment, maintaining a safe care space).
- Maintain high standards of personal hygiene and infection control.
- Accompany her in the community to events and activities, including during transportation via mobility Taxi or Bus.
- The young person has access to her own Mobility van and ideally the carer would be able to drive this to take her out into the community. Note, the current van is a manual Ford Transit
- Provide assistance in the community or other care facilities regularly attended E.g. Volunteering at the Library
Key Skills and Attributes
- Compassionate, patient, and attentive to detail.
- Confident in handling medical equipment (training will be provided).
- Physically capable of assisting with hoisting and positioning.
- Safety conscious during transfers and manual handling and able to follow procedures correctly.
- Excellent communication and listening skills to support the young person and liaise with family.
- Reliable, honest, and able to maintain confidentiality.
Requirements
- Current First Aid Certificate (including CPR).
- Current Driver’s License (preferred able to drive a manual).
- Willingness to undergo relevant training (hoist use, suction, cough assist, physiotherapy, preparing and administering medication).
- Flexible availability (up to 20 hours per week). Typically, mornings 7:30-12:00 and afternoons 4:00-7:00.
