About the Role and Team
We are seeking a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellow to join the renowned Waikato Hospital team. Our Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit performs over 650 open-heart procedures annually, alongside an active TAVI program, advanced aortic surgery, and approximately 200 thoracic cases, including uni- and multiportal thoracoscopy.
The Waikato Hospital Cardiac Fellowship offers exceptional exposure to complex adult cardiac surgery, including:
- Aortic root and arch surgery
- Multiple valve repair and replacement
- Rheumatic heart disease management
- Off-pump and arterial revascularisation
- Thoracic aortic surgery with stenting and hybrid procedures

About You
You will be a doctor who has completed cardiothoracic training and obtained their specialty fellowship (or an equivalent qualification) in a health system comparable to New Zealand, and who is capable of independently performing routine cardiac procedures.
The successful applicant will be required to:
- Manage outpatients and inpatients in Cardiothoracic Surgery Department under the supervision of the Cardiothoracic Surgeon
- Undertake clinical duties as directed by the Head of Department, Cardiothoracic Surgery
- Participate in the on-call SMO roster
- Participate in departmental meetings and be involved in teaching and service development
- Conduct research and quality improvement projects
Fellows in this program are expected to involve themselves in divisional research activities, and prepare presentations for research events.
