It is also home to one of the busiest emergency departments in the Southern Hemisphere.About the role:The General Manager Acute, Critical and Central Services holds accountability to the Clinical Director for the delivery of safe, high-quality, and effective clinical services across Middlemore Hospital.
This pivotal leadership role ensures excellence in operational performance, patient flow, and patient experience, while fostering strong partnerships across divisions, with Hato Hone St John, and other external service providers.The position plays a key role in managing organisational risk, escalation processes, and responses to unplanned or critical events that may impact hospital operations.

Working collaboratively across the system, the General Manager drives integration, sustainability, and continuous improvement in line with Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukaus strategic objectives.Key Accountabilities:Culture of Care: Lead by example to embed a culture of compassion, respect, and excellence in patient and staff experiences.Financial Performance: Ensure responsible financial management, operational efficiency, and long-term service sustainability.Operational Excellence: Oversee patient flow and hospital performance, including achievement of the Shorter Stays in ED target and other key performance indicators.Regional Collaboration: Foster strong partnerships across the Region to align with both local and regional priorities and service objectives.Health Equity: Champion equitable access and outcomes for Maaori, Pacific peoples, and communities experiencing health disparities, contributing to improved health indicators and outcomes.People and Culture: Promote a safe, supportive, and empowering workplace that values collaboration, staff wellbeing, and professional growth.Crisis and Event Management: Lead the operational response to major incidents, natural events, strikes, or other disruptions, ensuring continuity of safe and effective services.As a senior leader, the General Manager contributes to the strategic direction, planning, and delivery of Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukaus organisational goals.

The role reports through the Clinical Director and engages with key governance and executive audiences, including the Executive Leadership Team and the Counties Manukau District.Ideal Candidate:We are looking for an experienced General Manager who can demonstrate strong leadership skills, the ability to lead teams, manage systems, and critically evaluate and improve processes.

While experience in healthcare is advantageous, we are open to candidates from any large and complex industry.
