Store Supervisor for Asian Grocery Store
Seeking an experienced retail store supervisor to oversee daily operations of a bustling Asian grocery store. Asian Kai sells an extensive range of traditional and specialty food products from South East Asia, China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan. It is a busy supermarket, employing four part timers, so you need to excel at multitasking as you will be responsible for all aspects of running the store, especially on Saturdays and Sundays when we have the most customers coming in.
Key duties and responsibilities include:
- Ensure the store is running efficiently at all times--this includes monitoring staff members to make sure they are performing their duties well, shelves are well stocked and items are well presented, all pricing is accurate and easily visible, and all fridges and freezers are at the correct temperatures and accurately recorded per Health & Safety rules.
- Supervise the Asian Kai team of part timers and assign them duties as needed, create the weekly staff roster and comply with all company, Health & Safety and legal policies. Oversee the hiring and training process for new staff. Ensure all staff members work as a team and resolve any staff grievances.
- Demonstrate mastery of the POS system and train staff on how to use it, including ringing up items without a barcode. Oversee the returns process by evaluating returned goods and determining the appropriate recourse for the customer.
- Provide excellent customer service, especially answering customer questions about what ingredients they need to make a specific dish, leading them to the correct products and explaining how to use the products to cook their desired dish (this is the most common request from our customers).
- Oversee 4-6 deliveries/week, including pallets of frozen food, and unload and transport products to the warehouse. Gloves to protect your hands when unloading frozen foods and stocking them into the freezers, and a back brace to protect your back during heavy lifting, will be provided.
- Daily: Check stock levels, ensure products with the earliest expiration are at the front and rotate stock in the warehouse. Weekly: Order stock from 20+ suppliers for all items to need replenishment. Quarterly: Perform a detailed stocktake of all inventory in the shop and the warehouse. Every 6 months: Rearrange shelving to keep the store displays fresh and innovative to entice customers.
- Commute to Auckland fortnightly to pick up supplies from 6-12 suppliers (3-4 hours' drive each way). Typical schedule for a 1-day supply run (6-7 suppliers): Leave Taupo at 7 am, return to Taupo at 7 pm, unload supplies into the warehouse until 9 pm. When we need to pick up from 8+ suppliers, allow for 2 days/1 night in Auckland (accommodation and a food allowance will be provided). Gloves for frozen food handling, knee pads for loading supplies into the back of the ute and a back brace for heavy lifting will all be provided.
- Deliver to Taupo restaurants weekly, issue accurate invoices and monthly statements and ensure payment is received by the due date.
- Handle customer complaints according to the company policy, and ensure that all issues are resolved quickly and to the customer’s satisfaction as much as possible
- 1 year of previous experience as a Store Supervisor with similar duties as above.
- Physically fit and strong as there is a lot of heavy lifting required, with frequent deliveries of large pallets to be unloaded into the warehouse, and heavy products such as 20kg rice bags to be moved 50m from the warehouse to the shop.
- A full driver's licence valid in NZ (for the fortnightly supply runs to Auckland)
- Must have the legal right to work in NZ
A successful applicant will be a reliable and hardworking person, with a positive attitude to lead the team of part timers. He or she excels at multitasking, working under pressure and making decisions without supervision.
Previous experience ensuring compliance with food Health & Safety rules is a definite plus. Applicants should be knowledgeable about cooking ingredients and prepared food from South East Asia, China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan, so that you are able to answer customer questions about what ingredients they need and how to cook those ingredients to make the customer’s desired dish.
All employees will rotate cleaning duties with other staff members. Weekly: clean the bathroom and kitchen, clean under freezers and clean the refrigerator interiors. Every 3 months: defrost freezers. Every 6 months: clean the freezer motors. Asian Kai has 16 freezers and 4 refrigerators.
The Asian Kai Supervisor will work every weekend (Saturday & Sunday) and have flexible hours during the week, totaling 40 hours of work every week (usually from 0900 to 1800). If business needs require more hours, and the Supervisor is amenable, then all overtime hours worked will be paid at the same hourly rate.
