Silviculture Operator – Job Description
Requirements
This role requires a high level of fitness and stamina. Work is extremely physically demanding and is carried out in remote and often rugged terrain in all weather conditions.Applicants are required to have at least 3 years of practical forestry experience encompassing all or at least most of the silvicultural and forest establishment disciplines. As detailed below.
Core Disciplines
He/she will be able to perform these disciplines competently and productively while at the same time having a high regard for the Health and Safety of themselves and others that they are working with.- Core Disciplines include:
- Planting of seedlings
- Mixing of agrichemicals, Growsafe qualification requirement.
- Release spraying of seedlings using agrichemicals
- Tree selection
- Pruning (all lifts)
- Thinning to waste (chainsaw and chemical)
- Facilitate pre start (tailgate meetings) and record minutes.
- Monitor and manage Work Quality using sample plots and audits and measure against Job Prescription requirements
- Planning of operations using Job Prescriptions and Maps
- Transportation (driving) of Team Members and equipment using both road and off road vehicles, always demonstrating safe driving techniques.
- Management of Hazards, Risk and other relevant policies and procedures as stated in Rodco’s Health and Safety Management Plan. Document as required.
- Carry out SBO’s to verify skills and safety performance of other team members.
Location
The Employer’s premises are located at 1st Floor Adairs Building, 100 Grey Street, Gisborne. However, the employee will work at multiple locations within the East Coast, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Wairarapa, Nelson and Southland regions as required by the employer.
The Silviculture Operator will be required to travel and live in back packer style accommodation organised by Rodco. These camps are Drug and Alcohol free. All work related travel time is paid.
Hours of Work
Normal hours of work will be 48 hours per week, Monday to Friday, between the hours of 6.00am to 6.30pm. Total hours worked and start/finish times depending on the time of year, weather and amount of travel time.
PaymentHourly
Payment will be by a combination of hourly and piece rate. The hourly rate may vary depending on the task/role being undertaken but will be between $27 and $35/ hr. The exception being for travel time which is paid at $24.50 (for passengers)
Piece rate
The piece rate will be based on a day rate of $240 (8 hours @ $30). Hence if the target is 100, the piece rate will be $2.40. The target will be set on a job by job basis.In the event that payment averages less than $27 over the relevant pay period then your pay will be topped up to the equivalent of $27 per hour.
Drug and Alcohol Testing
Rodco takes the Health and Safety of its people seriously. To this end we have a Drug and Alcohol Policy which requires Pre-employment testing of short listed applicants.
