Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced full-time farmer to manage our well-established sheep and beef farm in Whangaripo Valley, north of Auckland. This role involves managing and overseeing the grazing of currently 300 beef cattle to finish, lambing 1,000 breeding ewes and maintaining and improving the land and infrastructure.

The successful candidate will live on-site in a four-bedroom house to ensure the smooth running of the farm operations. The position is sole charge, there are no other full time employees on the property. The successful candidate needs to be capable and motivated working alone the majority of the time but also able to enlist and manage casual staff as required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Cattle Management: Oversee the grazing and finishing of 300 beef cattle, ensuring optimal health, growth, and performance. This includes liaising with the appropriate stock agents for the purchasing and selling of cattle, weighing and keeping NAIT up to date.
  • Lambing: Assist with the lambing process for 800-1,000 breeding ewes, including monitoring the flock, ensuring proper lamb care, mustering, docking, organising shearing and fattening lambs to then be sold off farm at 18-20Kg.
  • Pasture Management: Maintain pasture health and grazing rotations to ensure efficient and sustainable use of the land.
  • Ability for input and control of the financial budget, including monitoring of operational and capital expenditure requirements annually.
  • Animal Health: Monitor the health and welfare of both cattle and sheep, administering treatments and vaccinations as needed, and liaising with the farm vet.
  • Farm Maintenance: Assist with the upkeep of farm infrastructure, including fences, water systems, and other essential equipment.
  • Stock Handling: Work with stock, including mustering, drafting, and yarding, ensuring safe and efficient handling of animals.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of livestock performance, health treatments, and farm activities.
  • Weeds: Manage weeds and gorse on farm through effective farm management.
  • Educate: Keep up with best industry farming practices and adapt operations and practises as necessary.
Skills and Experience:
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with owners and other stakeholders.
  • Proven experience in sheep and beef farming, previous management experience would be beneficial.
  • Ability to handle livestock safely and effectively, including sheep and cattle.
  • Strong knowledge and practise of good animal health and welfare practices.
  • Experience with pasture management and farm maintenance.
  • Self-motivated, proactive and able to work independently, honest and reliable.
  • Have an interest in giving back to the land, maintaining good soil health, help waterways and sustainable farming practices.
  • Have a desire to work to individual and common goals and establish KPI’s
  • Competent with farm machinery, including tractors, mowers, and other farm equipment.
