Shepherd General - Waipuna Farm - Invercargill
The Opportunity**
Are you passionate about farming and keen to develop your skills as part of a supportive and experienced team?
We're looking for a Shepherd General to join us at Waipuna Farm, where you'll gain hands-on experience across all aspects of our sheep, and beef operations — from stock work and general maintenance to pasture management and feed allocation. You'll play a role in executing a strategy focused on production and profitability, underpinned by sound farming principles like growing dry matter and converting it efficiently through feed budgeting and pasture management.
Working alongside a skilled Farm Manager who is committed to your growth, this is a great opportunity to build your confidence, broaden your experience, and contribute to a high-performing team. You’ll also become familiar with Pamu systems and processes, learning to record data in FarmIQ.
**The Farm**Waipuna Farm is a productive and well-run 560ha effective property featuring flat to gently rolling terrain.
The farm is centred around an all-grass wintering system and a streamlined cattle finishing operation.
Each season, it winters approximately 2,200 ewes and300 calves, with a goal of finishing all cattle and lambs over the summer.
Ideally located just 10 minutes from Mossburn, 40 minutes from Te Anau, and an easy 90-minute drive to both Queenstown and Invercargill, Waipuna offers the perfect balance of rural living and access to amenities. The area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with excellent hunting quite literally on your doorstep, great fishing spots nearby, and a welcoming local rugby club in Mossburn.
**About You**
You’re passionate about farming, love working with livestock, and want to be part of a team that works hard and gets results. You’re practical, positive, and always looking for ways to do the job better.
You will:- Enjoy working with animals and take their welfare seriously
- Bring 1-2 well-controlled working dogs or willing to build a team on the job.
- Be organised, reliable, and self-motivated in your daily tasks
- Communicate clearly and work well as part of a team
- Be comfortable keeping accurate records and using farm technology (or keen to learn)
- Take a proactive approach to health, safety, and looking after farm assets
- Have a valid restricted or full driver licence
