Apply now! Mō te tīma / About our teamThe Office for Seniors is a high-impact business unit that sits within the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), dedicated to improving outcomes for older people across New Zealand.
Within MSD's Policy Branch, the Office has a distinct mandate and budget, and works directly with the Minister for Seniors.Our team drives action by partnering with Ministers, government agencies, and communities to provide clear, effective information and strategic advice on the key issues that matter to older New Zealanders.
Over the last few years this has included developing the cross-Government Better Later Life ActionPlan and implementing initiatives to improve digital inclusion, senior entrepreneurship and supports for older people to age in place.Our work supports lasting change for some of the most valued members of our society.
Mō te tūnga / About the roleAs Director of the Office for Seniors, you will lead a skilled team of advisors and communication experts, ensuring that both government and the public have access to high-quality information and advice about issues affecting older people.
You will build strong partnerships with organisations representing olderNew Zealanders and work across government to drive coordination and policy alignment.In this senior leadership role, you'll provide trusted insights and strategic advice to the Minister for Seniors, support them to engage with other Ministers, and help champion initiatives that make a tangible difference.
You'll also be responsible for monitoring and reporting on the wellbeing of older people, identifying opportunities for innovation such as through partnering opportunities with central and local government, communities, and business, while promoting the sharing of good practice.
This is a unique opportunity to shape national outcomes and lead a small, dynamic team with purpose.
Mōu- Ngā Pūkenga me ngā Wheako / Skills and experienceTo be successful in this role, you will bring:Knowledge and interest in issues that impact older people, their whānau and families, as well as an understanding of groups representing older people, including Māori, Pacific and ethnic organisations, and international groups.Experience building and maintaining strong relationships across government, local government, and community sectors, including with iwi, Māori, Pacific Peoples, academia and researchers.A strong record of leadership, demonstrating good judgement, strategic thinking, flexibility and originality.Experience leading through others to provide advice and support to Ministers, Chief Executives and senior officials.Skills in developing, improving and using engagement and consultation processes.The ability to take a strategic approach to supporting the interests of a sector or organisation.Excellent written and oral communication skills, with an understanding of different public communication channels.
Experience managing budgets (desirable).Experience leading staff and supporting the growth and development of capability.Confidence in promoting and leading change.Experience working in complex environments and demonstrating political nous.Project or programme management experience, including commissioning work.A tertiary qualification in a relevant area, or equivalent operational experience.Ready to make a real difference?
