The Grounds and Maintenance (G&M) teams are spread across two zones.
Zone one looks after the high-security (HS) facility, and zone two is for low-security units.The horticulture sector operates on a standard 40-hour workweek, operating between the hours of 0700 and 1700.G&M provide prisoners with employment opportunities, work experience, and qualifications training.
This aligns with the Department's mission of reintegrating prisoners through constructive educational endeavours.A commercial approach to employment training is embraced to ensure effectiveness, covering basic work attendance skills, on-the-job training, and, when feasible, nationally recognized certification of attained skill levels.G&M focuses on maintaining the facility's gardens, lawns, and related areas, ensuring their upkeep and aesthetic appeal.
At Waikeria, training in the cultivation and use of Rongoā plants will be available, providing the man in care with valuable skills to support the health and wellness of their whanau and communities.General Maintenance (experience preferred but not essential)Part of this role also involves the maintenance and upkeep of the facility's buildings.
Working with the men in our care, you will be washing down buildings and performing minor painting and other related tasks.Join us in this rewarding role and make a difference in the lives of those in our care while advancing your own career.Mōu | About you We are looking for a person with a range of practical hands on abilities in the areas of asset maintenance, grounds maintenance and horticulture (nurseries).You will also need to have great people skills and the motivation to want to manage and develop men in Prison- This is a role with unique challenges and rewards.Our Industries Team are all about supporting the men in Prison to improve their work habits, work experiences and skills so that they can increase their chances of obtaining sustainable and legitimate mahī on their release.
By providing this foundation to success, we reduce reoffending and keep our communities safer.The training you provide will enable others to achieve NZQA qualifications linked to the Primary Industry Training Organisation.
In providing a platform of good working habits to take forward to the future, you will further support rehabilitation and reintegration practices.The role also provides support to the wider Offender Employment operation on occasion as part of the wider Internal Services Team.This rewarding position demands someone who possesses:Adult training experience with an emphasis on areas of asset maintenance, grounds maintenance and horticulture (nurseries).Accreditation and/or similar Adult training/teaching qualification an advantage.Outstanding H&S practices.Exceptional people management & communication skills.The ability to motivate and develop people within a team environment.General maintenance and building experience preferred but not essential.
Utu aa-tau | SalaryThe salary range for this role is $70,014- $87,691. Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experienceExperience as an adult educator and Primary ITO Assessor or NZQA Assessor is preferred.
A full drivers licence and First Aid Certificate is required.A comprehensive Frontline Introduction into Corrections and extensive initial training is provided for the successful applicant.This will involve onsite training as well as well as residential training at our College just outside of Wellington to focus on the custodial elements of our position.
The Department of Corrections manages offenders to ensure they comply with their sentences.
