Mō te tūnga | About the roleOffender Employment (OE) is all about giving people in prison the opportunity to gain skills and work experience to increase their chances of obtaining employment after release.
By providing this foundation to success, we reduce reoffending and keep our communities safer.The Canterbury Region boasts two prison kitchens & laundries
  • one is located at Christchurch Men's Prison, which is responsible for producing approximately 900 meals, three times a day, for the site.

The second kitchen is located at Christchurch Women's Prison, which is responsible for producing approximately 700 meals, three times a day, for the site and Rolleston Prison.

We envisage there being multiple Instructor vacancies at each location.As a Catering & Laundry Instructor at our prisons in Canterbury, you will teach, support, and use your life experiences to help others unleash their talents and be part of something that can be life changing.

We see Offender Employment playing an integral role for the people in our care to reclaim their mana and restore themselves to their rightful place in their whānau and society.

By doing this, we can help break the cycle of reoffending and improve the wellbeing and safety of the people in our care, their whānau, and our wider communities, as well as contribute to intergenerational transformation.You will be providing direct supervision and practical training within a commercial kitchen setting.

From general meal preparation and delivery to corporate catering, you will enable our people to achieve NZQA qualifications and provide a platform of good working habits for them to take forward to the future.
The role also provides support to the laundry operation as part of the wider Internal Services team.Instructors have the same classification as Corrections Officers and, as such, complete the same initial training courses.

This will involve on-site training as well as residential training at our National Learning Centre in Upper Hutt, Wellington, to focus on the custodial elements of the position.

The hours of work will be on a standard shift basis of 80 hours per fortnight, Monday to Sunday, 0600hrs
  • 1800hrs. Working public holidays, along with the possibility of some overtime or callouts, may be required.
Mōu | About you This rewarding position will suit someone who:Has experience and a proven passion in the catering industry at a professional level.Holds London City & Guilds 706/1 and 706/2 or equivalent trade qualifications.Possesses outstanding health & safety practices.Has exceptional communication skills and the ability to develop effective relationships.Has ability to motivate and develop people within a team environment.Can operate effectively in a culturally diverse setting and has an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.Has a full NZ driver licence (or is eligible to obtain one).Experience as an adult educator or NZAQ assessor (4098) is an advantage.The latter stages of the recruitment process involve pre-employment checks including a drug test, medical test, physical assessment and police vetting.

Utu ā-tau | SalaryAs of the 1st July 2025, the starting salary for this role will be $72, 514
  • $80, 876 per annum.
Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
Once in the role, there are opportunities to increase your salary over time up to $90, 322.
