About Us

Imagination Station is the flagship charitable initiative of LUG 4/2, dedicated to bringing accessible, hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths) learning to tamariki aged 5–13 across Canterbury through the power of LEGO-based education.

Based in the heart of Christchurch at Turanga Library, we run inspiring workshops, after-school programmes, school curriculum sessions, and holiday workshops—delivering over 53,000 LEGO STEAM interactions annually.

None of this would be possible without our vibrant volunteer community. Since 2015, we’ve trained over 750 volunteers—more than half of whom identify as disabled, neurodivergent, rainbow youth, or English language learners. Our volunteers are at the heart of what we do, and we’re deeply committed to creating an inclusive, welcoming environment where everyone can thrive.

About the Role

We’re looking for a passionate, organised, people-focused Volunteer Coordinator who thrives on connection, community, and creating positive impact. You’re someone who loves working with people—whether it’s one-on-one or leading a lively group—and you have the empathy, organisation, and energy to bring out the best in every volunteer.

This role is a dynamic blend of hands-on support, coordination, and leadership. You’ll recruit, train, and mentor our diverse team of volunteers, champion a positive volunteer culture, and ensure every volunteer feels confident, valued, and celebrated.

Key Responsibilities
Volunteer Engagement & Support
  • Recruit, onboard, and train volunteers through structured and inclusive processes.
  • Maintain a supportive and productive team of up to 50 active volunteers.
  • Deliver pastoral care, mentoring, feedback, conflict resolution, and volunteer check-ins.
  • Coordinate volunteer social events, recognition initiatives, and training.
  • Develop and implement a Buddy System and manage our Friends of Imagination Station alumni network.
Programme Delivery
  • Schedule and supervise volunteers across programmes, including birthday parties, outreach events, workshops, and The Christchurch Brick Show.
  • Deliver LEGO-based birthday parties and assist in teaching sessions using your own skills and experience to support learning and engagement.
  • Ensure customer engagement and safety in our LEGO play spaces.
Administration & Coordination
  • Maintain accurate volunteer records, rosters, and documentation.
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with volunteers about shifts and expectations.
  • Manage general admin and logistics for volunteer engagement.

Who We’re Looking For

You’re someone who has:
  • Experience working with diverse people, including youth, disabled and neurodivergent individuals, and those with English as a second language.
  • High emotional intelligence and strong interpersonal skills.
  • A passion for empowering others and contributing to community impact.
  • Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • A flexible, team-oriented approach with the ability to work independently.
  • A culturally responsive and inclusive mindset.
  • Creativity and a practical, problem-solving attitude.
  • A full, clean NZ driver’s licence.
  • An appreciation for LEGO and its educational value!
Bonus Skills (Not Essential, But Awesome!):
  • Experience in teaching or tutoring.
  • Familiarity with Better Impact or other volunteer management tools.
  • Background in STEAM subjects.
  • Social media or digital communications skills.
  • Fluency in additional languages.
Other Key Details
  • This role is for 26 to 30 hours per week.
  • Regular weekend work is required (either Tuesday–Saturday or Sunday–Thursday).
  • Flexibility is essential—especially to support evening or weekend volunteer events.
  • LEGO play and interaction are part of your daily responsibilities—yes, seriously!
Why Join Us?

You’ll be part of a small, passionate, values-driven team working to make a genuine difference in children’s lives and in the lives of our volunteers. Every day is different, and every day involves LEGO. You’ll help create a supportive, creative, and joyful environment where everyone is encouraged to grow and be themselves.
