About the role

Our Specialist Mental Health Services (SMHS) are at the leading edge of mental health service delivery. We provide a range of inpatient and community services to tangata whaiora in the Waitaha Rohe (Canterbury district).

The Anxiety Disorders Service is a Specialty Mental Health Service of Te Whatu Ora, Waitaha [Health New Zealand, Canterbury] provides specialist assessment and treatment to people (aged 18-65) whose everyday life is significantly affected by an anxiety disorder.

We are currently recruiting a P'kenga Atawhai to join our team of dedicated health professionals striving to provide the best quality care to consumers and their families/ Whanau This is a 0.5FTE 20 hour per week permanent position.

The Anxiety Disorders Service has a multi-disciplinary team comprised of a Consultant Psychiatrist, Clinical Psychologists, Clinical Nurse Therapists, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, Registrar, administration staff and access to a Physiotherapist and Dietician.

Our service's philosophy is whanaungatanga - acknowledging the centrality of whanau in our work and the lives of tangata whaiora.

As a P'kenga Atawhai you will:

  • Awhina and manaaki our tangata whaiora and whanau.
  • Connect and engage with tangata whaiora to understand their cultural requirements through assessments (Te Arotakenga - cultural assessments).
  • Develop and maintain connections in the community to ensure pathways to wellbeing are available to tangata whaiora and their whanau.
  • Work alongside and guide our qualified professionals to be culturally responsive.
  • Willing to be on the out of hours roster.
  • Tautoko (support) our kaimahi (staff) in understanding Tikanga Maori.

About You

To be successful as a P'kenga Atawhai, your core strengths will include:

  • Experience working with tangata whaiora who have mental health difficulties.
  • A strong knowledge of Te Ao Maori (Te Reo Maori me ona Tikanga Maori) and ability to apply these values when connecting with others.
  • A natural ability to build and nurture relationships.
  • Reflective communication practices and a holistic view when caring for others.
  • A NZ driver's license is essential.
