We're looking for a passionate and skilled Mate to join the San Tongariro, part of Sanford's Wildcatch scampi fleet. Operating from Timaru and Bluff, the vessel undertakes voyages of up to six weeks, fishing for scampi across the Chatham Rise, Auckland Islands, and Chatham Islands, with catch delivered to Sanford's Bluff and Timaru processing sites.

This is a great opportunity to step into leadership on a respected scampi vessel. The San Tongariro, recently repurposed from inshore operations to join the scampi fleet, brings fresh energy and opportunity for the right Mate to make their mark.

This is an Independent Contractor (self-employed) position on a 6 weeks on / 6 weeks off rotation. Travel to and from Timaru or Invercargill is covered by Sanford.

Responsibilities
  • Support the daily operations on the vessel, ensuring the crew is working efficiently and safely.
  • Assist with navigation, weather monitoring, record keeping, and bridge watchkeeping.
  • Work with the crew to ensure efficient, high-standard scampi packing and processing at sea.
  • Monitor and uphold all safety procedures and vessel compliance requirements.
  • Foster a productive, respectful, and communicative crew environment onboard.

About you

You will be a confident communicator who leads by example and supports the Skipper in running a safe, successful vessel. You'll bring professionalism, resilience, and a strong sense of accountability to everything you do, alongside a proactive approach to health, safety, and wellbeing.

You'll thrive in the rhythm of life at sea and take pride in delivering high-quality seafood to the world.

What we're looking for
  • Mate Fishing Vessel (MFV) certification or equivalent.
  • A current Maritime Medical or ability to obtain one.
  • Understanding of relevant NZ maritime legislation including MOSS, HSWA, Fisheries Act, and MPI food safety standards.
  • Proven leadership and operational experience in scampi fisheries or similar deepwater operations.
