Support Worker – Casual Position
  • Hawkes Bay-based
  • $24.36 to $29.10 per hour
  • Casual contract

We are seeking a dedicated Support Workers to join our vibrant and passionate organisation. At Community Connections, we believe in doing things collectively, driven by our unwavering passion for empowering people with disabilities to live the lives they choose.

About Us

Community Connections is a values-led disability support provider operating across the North Island. Our vision is a fully inclusive Aotearoa, where disabled people are respected, supported, and able to live life on their own terms in the community of their choice.

We are an Equal Employment Opportunities employer and are committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the New Zealand Disability Strategy. We strongly encourage applications from people with lived experience of disability or mental health, as well as those from Maori, Pasifika, and LGBTQIA+ communities.

The Role

We’re on the lookout for a compassionate and adaptable Support Worker to join our dynamic Residential team on a casual basis, supporting services across the Hawke’s Bay region. This role includes weekend shifts and sleepovers, offering variety and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact across multiple settings.

The people you’ll be supporting enjoy the simple pleasures of life—chatting over coffee, spending time outdoors, and expressing themselves through creative activities like arts and crafts. You’ll be working alongside individuals with a range of support needs, including those with intellectual and physical disabilities, helping them live life to the fullest.

Using a “do with, not for” approach, your focus will be on promoting independence, respecting daily routines, and building strong, trusting relationships. Just as importantly, you’ll encourage the people you support to grow their confidence, strengthen their community connections, and explore new opportunities to engage with the world around them.

About You

You’ll bring a calm, respectful, and strengths-based approach to your work, along with a warm and person-centred mindset. Ideally, you’ll have experience—or a genuine interest—in supporting people with disabilities and mental health needs, and a willingness to keep learning and growing in your role.
Your strong understanding of professional boundaries and privacy, combined with excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills, will help you build trusting relationships and thrive as part of a supportive team. You’ll also need to be physically capable of providing mobility support, as some individuals may require assistance getting back up after a fall.

Flexibility, reliability, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively will be key to your success in this role.

Experience or understanding in any of the following areas is highly desirable:

  • Positive behaviour support and skill-building approaches
  • Working alongside people with complex communication needs
  • Understanding of intellectual disability
  • Using adaptive communication tools or basic sign language
Essential Criteria
  • Full New Zealand Driver’s Licence
  • Legal right to work in New Zealand
  • Willingness to undergo Police and Oranga Tamariki vetting
  • Availability to work weekends and overnight shifts
  • Be able to provide mobility support

Why Join Us?

At Community Connections, you’ll be part of a supportive, values-driven team that’s passionate about making a real difference. We value the work you do and offer a range of benefits, including:

  • Weekend pay rates
  • Mobile phone allowance
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Program
  • Ongoing training and development opportunities

If you're ready to make a real impact and grow your career in a role that’s meaningful, empowering, and community-focused, we’d love to hear from you.
