We’re looking for a motivated Shepherd to join our team and take the next step in their farming career. This is a genuine stock-focused role — around 90% of your time will be working with sheep and cattle — so strong dog work and good stock sense are essential.
The Farm
Ahiweka is a mixed contour hill country property, from flats through to steeper country. We run a mainly breeding and finishing operation with a component of trade stock.Over the past three years, we’ve made significant investment into development to lift production in a sustainable manner. We take pride in tidy presentation, strong animal performance, and doing the basics well.

You’ll be involved in all aspects of sheep and beef farming, including:- Mustering and stock movements with dogs
- Animal health (drenching, dagging, docking, treatments)
- Lambing and calving
- Yard work and drafting
- Farm maintenance
- General day-to-day station jobs
There is real responsibility here for someone who wants it. You’ll be working closely with the Manager and given opportunities to grow your decision-making and stock management skills.
We’re Looking For Someone Who:- Has solid sheep and beef farming experience
- Has 4–6 working dogs under good command
- Is fit, practical, and enjoys a physical day’s work
- Takes pride in stockmanship and animal welfare
- Has motorbike experience and a current driver’s licence
- Is honest, reliable, and able to work independently or in a team
- Is legally able to work in New Zealand
This role will suit someone keen to establish themselves, build a strong dog team, and become part of a rural community. Whether you enjoy rugby, hunting, fishing, diving or just good country company — Flemington and the wider Porongahau district offer a great social scene and strong local support networks.
What We Offer- Competitive remuneration package based on experience
- Two-bedroom accommodation on farm
- A progressive farming business with ongoing development
- A positive work environment with strong mentoring
- Support for further training and upskilling
- Flexibility on start date for the right person
This is a great opportunity to gain experience on a hill country station while enjoying everything Central Hawke’s Bay rural life has to offer.
