Diesel Mechanic / Fitter – Wellington Rail Industry

We’re looking for an experienced Diesel Mechanic / Fitter to join our team in Wellington and help keep New Zealand’s rail network running smoothly. If you’ve got a passion for heavy machinery, thrive on problem-solving, and want to work on unique and challenging equipment, this is the role for you.
About the Role:

You’ll be part of a skilled maintenance team, responsible for servicing, diagnosing, and repairing diesel locomotives and other rail plant equipment. This is hands-on, varied work where no two days are the same.

Key Responsibilities: Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic faults in diesel locomotives

Carry out scheduled maintenance and inspections to ensure operational safety
Work from technical manuals, drawings, and schematics
Maintain accurate service records and report on faults

Assist with breakdown repairs, sometimes at short notice

What We’re Looking For: Trade qualification in diesel fitting/mechanics or heavy plant maintenance

Proven experience working with heavy diesel engines or rail equipment
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Safety-first attitude and commitment to rail industry standards

Flexibility to work shifts, including weekends and call-outs when required
