Timaru Girls' High School is looking for a reliable and practical Gardener / Caretaker to help maintain our grounds and support the day-to-day upkeep of the school.

This is a part-time, permanent role (25 hours per week, 52 weeks per year), with some flexibility around start and finish times for the right person. There may be occasional additional hours as required.

You will be employed under the School Caretakers, Cleaners and Canteen Staff Collective Agreement 2025-2027, with four weeks annual leave.

About the role:

You'll play a key role in maintaining the school's outdoor areas and assisting with general upkeep tasks. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Operating zero-turn and out-front mowers, along with line trimmers and blowers
  • Weed spraying and general garden maintenance
  • Pruning trees and shrubs
  • Planting, weeding, and caring for garden beds
  • Managing garden waste
  • Assisting with general maintenance tasks such as painting and basic handyman work

About you:

We're looking for someone who is practical, dependable, and takes pride in their work. You will also need to be comfortable working in a school environment alongside staff and students.

You will bring:

  • Proven experience in lawn mowing and line trimming, with a strong focus on safe operation (essential)
  • A positive, helpful attitude and strong work ethic
  • The ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities
  • Horticultural knowledge (desirable)

Requirements:

  • Full NZ driver licence
  • NZ residency or citizenship
  • Willingness to undergo a police vetting check
