Community Support Worker - Aspirations

Spectrum Care runs a vocational support service in Lower Hutt for people with intellectual disabilities.? These people are young, vibrant and ready to find their place in the world, and your job will be to help them do that. As a Community Support Worker you will take on tasks that are dynamic and will depend on the needs and dreams of each person.You will support people to find and follow those dreams; making friends, having fun, connecting and contributing to their local communities, continuing to grow personally, and to find other meaningful experiences.?This group of people we support are considered to have very high support needs and will need staff that can see them for the person they are inside and what makes them tick.

We are looking for people who are interesting, people with hobbies and interests and skills that they will enjoy sharing with others.? It could be drama, music, art, dance, entrepreneurialism, the environment, horticulture, hospitality, sports or something completely different.?We need people who are well connected to their communities and will help others connect to them too.? You need to be a natural teacher, be observant and intuitive, genuinely respectful and appreciative of diversity, and be kind, fun and patient.
Skills & Experience- Empathy for the challenges of trying to build an ordinary life while living with a disability
- Energy to keep up with someone who likes to be on the go a lot
- Ability to remain calm, and calming, in all situations
- Resilience to help people keep boundaries to ensure their safety
- Good at explaining and negotiating
- Ability to communicate effectively and supportively with family, colleagues and the person you support
- Ability and willingness to provide support and motivation with personal cares and daily living skills
The ideal candidate will have:
- Excellent, clear, understandable verbal and written English is a pre-requisite to be considered for this role
- Able to pass a NZ police check
- Experience supporting people with disabilities, and or mental health issues, and/or behaviours that can be challenging is desirable but not necessary
- Reliability, commitment, and passion for working with people
- A full New Zealand driver's licence (essential)
- An interest in attaining a Community Support Worker Level Three or above qualification- we can support you to achieve this while you work
- The ability to use a computer effectively, including programs such as Word, Internet Explorer, and email

If you are a non-resident applying for this role you must meet the following INZ Level 3 skill requirements to be considered:
- at least 2 years of relevant work experience, or
- a relevant qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) — this must be at least a level 4 qualification for a role at skill level 3, or a diploma for a role at skill level 2.
