Road Equip Diesel Services Ltd is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic with strong experience in asphalt paving equipment and hydraulic systems. This is a hands-on role suited to someone confident fault-finding in a workshop and field environment, who takes pride in safe, high-quality workmanship and keeping equipment running with minimal downtime.

The Position

As a Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic (Asphalt & Hydraulics Specialist), you will play a key role in the day-to-day servicing, diagnosis, repair, and preventative maintenance of heavy machinery used in road construction and asphalt production.

Key tasks, duties and responsibilities include: Diagnosing, servicing and repairing diesel-powered heavy equipment

Maintaining and repairing asphalt paving equipment, including pavers, rollers, skid steers, loaders, and asphalt plant machinery
Troubleshooting and repairing hydraulic systems including pumps, motors, valves, cylinders, and hoses
Carrying out preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing
Fault-finding using hydraulic and electrical schematics, manuals, and diagnostic tools
Repairing and replacing engines, transmissions, braking systems, and other major components as required
Providing field service repairs and breakdown support when required
Ensuring equipment meets safety and operational standards and maintaining a safe work environment
Completing accurate service records, job cards, and work orders
Working with operators and supervisors to minimise downtime and improve reliability

Maintaining a clean and organised work area, including basic housekeeping at the end of each day

Employment Details

Position: Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic (Asphalt & Hydraulics Specialist)
Location: Porirua
Employment type: Full-time, permanent
Guaranteed hours: Minimum 40 hours per week
Pay rate: $35 – $45 per hour (depending on skills and experience)
Work schedule: Rostered hours with flexibility required; overtime and/or on-call work may be required at times

Work environment: Workshop and outdoor field service work; role is physically demanding and may involve lifting heavy components and tools

Minimum Skills and Experience Required

To be considered for this role, applicants must have:

At least two years of proven experience as a Diesel Mechanic / Heavy Equipment Mechanic (or equivalent relevant experience)
Strong knowledge of heavy equipment servicing and repair practices
Solid hydraulic diagnostic and repair capability
Ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics
Experience using diagnostic tools and working with modern equipment electronics
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong communication skills and a professional, customer-focused approach

Reliability, punctuality, and a strong commitment to health and safety

Preferred (but not essential)

Trade qualification in Diesel Mechanics or Heavy Automotive Engineering
Experience with asphalt paving equipment and related machinery
Exposure to major equipment brands (e.g., Caterpillar, Bomag, Volvo CE, Wirtgen Group, Hamm, Vögele)
Welding and fabrication experience

Class 2–5 driver’s licence (or equivalent)
