WHERE
Atihau-Whanganui Incorporation (AWHI) is a large-scale Maori agribusiness comprising 40,800ha across eight sheep and beef farms, and one dairy farm in the Central North Island, at the foothills of Mount Ruapehu. Approximately 83% of the land resource is principally for sheep and cattle with dairy and forestry interests making up the balance.
Ohorea Station is a 5628 ha total sheep and beef breeding unit and is a mix of rolling to steeper hill country with larger paddocks and good traditional mustering opportunities. Ohorea carries 37,000su, including 15,000 ewes and 900 cows, all replacements are kept, with the rest transferred as store stock to the finishing properties.
In this role you will work under an experienced Farm Manager who is looking to transfer his farming knowledge and provide the appointee with development opportunities. When working for AWHI, you will also have exposure to the wider business and team, further enhancing your farming knowledge and experience.Professional development is encouraged and attendance at discussion groups, course or training days will be encouraged.
WHAT
As the Head Shepherd you will be working alongside and reporting to the Farm Manager. You will be assisting the Farm Manager in the day-to-day planning with stock and staff and be responsible for delegating and allocating tasks to the team as well as supporting them with their development.
Key to this role will be assisting the Farm Manager to achieve the Station’s performance targets. You will need to be well planned and organised and enjoy learning from an established Farm Manager who is keen to share his knowledge with you.
Essential to this role is having strong stockmanship and an established team of 6 working dogs. Some previous experience working to scale and on steep hill country will be essential, as you will be handling large mobs on a day-to-day basis.

WHO

- Advanced knowledge and experience in the management of soils, pasture and animals.

- Industry training is desirable.
- Great support systems in place within the business, with a management team who are willing to pass on knowledge and upskill their employees.
- Provides the opportunity to gain further responsibility and professional development is encouraged.
