WHERE
Atihau-Whanganui Incorporation (AWHI) is a large-scale Maori agribusiness comprising 40,800ha across eight sheep and beef farms, and one dairy farm in the Central North Island, at the foothills of Mount Ruapehu. Approximately 83% of the land resource is principally for sheep and cattle with dairy and forestry interests making up the balance.
Ohotu Station is A 1559 ha total, 1350 ha effective farm. It is one of two finishing farms within the Awhi business and is located on SH49, just 10 minutes from Ohakune. The station is predominately finishing and there is a small component of breeding stock, this is to help with pasture management and parasites.
WHAT
As the Senior Shepherd/Block Manager you will be looking after 500ha at the southern end of Ohotu, one of the finishing farms. You will also work in and be part of the larger finishing team, reporting directly to the Finishing Manager.
This is mainly a grass-based system, and it is important you have an understanding/be keen to learn how to manage the grass, stocking rates and residuals so you can produce quality feed. You will need to enjoy the weighing and monitoring of stock and have strong observation skills to pick up any animal health issues, including managing the tail end and drafting them off into better grass.
Along with the stock and pasture management, part of this role will require you to do general work, such as R&M fencing, maintaining power and checking for any water issues.
