About the Role
Working as Dermatology Advanced Trainee
Dermatology is a fascinating specialty which includes aspects of medicine, surgery and pathology. Patients range from neonates to the elderly. Building from a sound base in General Medicine, you will learn about inflammatory skin diseases, skin malignancies, infections, infestations, autoimmune skin diseases, androgenic conditions and many more.Knowledge of dermatology can be of great value in many specialties including General Medicine, Rheumatology and Infectious Disease. There have been significant advances in therapeutic options in recent years. The Training Posts include positions with Greenlane Hospital (Auckland district); Counties Manukau district; Waikato Hospital and Christchurch Hospital.
These runs may be recognised, for those accepted onto the scheme, by the RACP as training positions for specialist qualification and will see the registrar responsible for the following:
- Working closely with Dermatologists to assess, investigate and manage new and follow-up patients in outpatient clinics
- Reviewing inpatient referrals from other specialties
- Assessing and admitting acute and elective Dermatology patients
- Undertaking clinical responsibilities as directed by the Consultant
- Organising investigations and ensuring results are reviewed, acted upon and signed
- Day to day ward management of patients under their team's care, in consultation with others involved in the care of the patient where appropriate
- Answering calls for advice from the community or other specialties
- Performing cutaneous surgical procedures

About you
Advanced Training in Dermatology Training years 1 and 2- You will need to have passed the FRACP written exam or be registered to sit the clinical exam for 2026.
- These positions will only be offered to those who have passed the clinical exam and completed basic training. For those completing the exam later this year and should you not pass the exam, you will no longer be eligible for advanced training position and you may be considered for a run allocation.
- Eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Support and assistance with this process is provided.
- Non training positions will only be allocated to if there are no suitable applicants for Advanced Training.
- You will have satisfactorily completed two years of advanced dermatology training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
- There will be a 12 month run in the Department of Dermatology at Middlemore hospital with a focus on medical dermatology including; rheumatology, haematology, health psychology, and paediatric combined clinics. Additionally there will be a weekly dermatopathology clinic and management training. A research component is expected and in patient responsibilities. This position will encourage further development of autonomy and confidence with in a hospital environment.
- Must be at least a Basic Trainee Registrar with the RACP, ideally FRACP Part 1 and with experience in General Medicine.
- Eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Support and assistance with this process is provided.
- Under some circumstances, a period of Dermatology is accepted for Basic Training.
