About the role

We are welcoming applications for a Specialist Anaesthetist (SMO) to join the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Taranaki. Our team currently includes 27 Specialist Anaesthetists, one Fellow, and seven Registrars.

We are particularly interested in Anaesthetists with Intensive Care training, but we also welcome applications from Anaesthetists without ICU experience who are interested in contributing to our anaesthesia service.

The department supports a wide range of clinical services including anaesthesia, perioperative and pain medicine, and intensive care. We have a strong commitment to excellence in clinical practice, education, quality improvement, and research, and we are continually developing processes that enhance patient care.

About you

The ideal candidates will:

Bring clinical expertise to a smaller provincial hospital and enjoy the lifestyle the region has to offer.
Have essential senior experience in providing Intensive Care for patients with acute, severe, and life-threatening conditions.
Be Anaesthetists with ICU expertise, however, all SMOs with ICU experience will also be considered.
Be eligible for an Annual Practicing Certificate with relevant vocational scope with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
Work with others to promote a cohesive team culture of collaborative practice, openness, humour, and respect across disciplines.

Demonstrate commitment to continuing medical education and professional development.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The successful candidates will

Join a team of 7 Anaesthetists with Intensive Care skills and 2 Intensivists.
Participate in an Intensive Care daytime roster and an Intensive Care after-hours 1:7 on call roster.
Respond swiftly and effectively to emergency situation and provide expert medical care to critical patients in the intensive care unit.

Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement comprehensive treatment plans.

Our ICU is working towards CICM C6 ICU training accreditation. In May 2026 we are moving into a state-of-the-art green certified new ICU build. The unit will have 16 individual, closed glass bed spaces including 6 ICU ventilated bedspaces, a paediatric ICU roon, bariatric room, 4 CCU beds and HDU beds.
In addition to the 16 individual bed spaces there will also be a full procedure room and a separate whanau room for palliative care. The unit is also pandemic ready with multiple negative pressure rooms and the ability to split the unit into two separate areas.

The progression towards a CICM C6 training unit is aiming for accreditation in February 2027.

Taranaki Base Hospital, situated in New Plymouth, is a progressive regional secondary referral centre for the province of Taranaki with a wide range of medical specialties, an Intensivist-managed ICU within a combined ICU/HDU/CCU and a well-equipped Radiology Department providing interventional radiology, which includes digital radiology, CT guided biopsy MRI, CT and angiography.

There is an excellent Laboratory Service and the IT service is among the best in the country.
